Media and multimedia filtration (MMF)
In media/multimedia filtration a bed of media material (e.g. sand or mix of different medias) is used to remove particles from water. Typical use case in industrial context is pre-treatment of raw water before water softening and membrane treatment stages. Media filtration can also be used e.g. for iron and manganese removal.
Water softeners are used to soften hard water which is typically due to high amounts of magnesium and calcium salts. Water softeners are used e.g. in heat power / steam plants, laundries and other processes where hardness of water creates problems (limescale formation / scaling).
Nano and ultrafiltration
Nano (NF) and ultrafiltration (UF) are implementations of membrane filtration technology (similar to reverse osmosis) that are used e.g. for potable water treatment and various industrial processes.
Reverse osmosis (RO) is an implementation of membrane technology where water is forced through a semipermeable membrane with pressure that overcomes the natural osmotic pressure of processed water. With reverse osmosis it is possible to remove all dissolved salts from water with up to 97-99.5 % rejection. Typical use cases are e.g. turbine power plants, drinking and irrigation water production from sea water (desalination) and variety of industrial processes.
In electrodeionization (EDI) electricity together with ion exchange membranes and resin are used to deionize water. EDI is typically used for final polishing of water from reverse osmosis stage when there’s need for very low conductivity of water (below 0.1 μS/cm).
In membrane degasification process gases (typically carbon dioxide or oxygen) are removed from water with separation membrane and negative pressure air flush (for carbon dioxide removal) or vacuum condition (for oxygen removal). Membrane technology is used for e.g. for treatment of water between reverse osmosis and EDI stages or removal of oxygen in certain energy production/district heating applications.
In coagulation polymers are added to water in order to gather the unwanted particles/matter into flocs that can be then removed e.g. with sand filtration. Coagulation is used e.g. for removal of organic matter and suspended solids from raw water.
In UV disinfection short-wavelength ultraviolet light is used to eliminate microorganisms from water. UV disinfection is typically used e.g. in pool water treatment (chloramine reduction and disinfection) and treatment of process water while in storage or circulating in process.
Chemical dozing is simply a method of feeding chemicals e.g. into water to achieve desired influence. Typical use cases are e.g. flocculation of organics, pool water chlorine disinfection and pH control.
